Doctoral Funding

The Columbian College of Arts & Sciences offers full-funding packages to the vast majority of its admitted PhD students. These packages include full tuition coverage, a living stipend, a salaried graduate assistantship position, and a health insurance subsidy. While most admitted students will receive a CCAS Doctoral Fellowship, some students may be eligible for packages above the standard rate. Students are also welcome to apply for external opportunities to augment their CCAS funding.
For advanced PhD students, CCAS offers funding to support dissertation research and teaching development. Please visit the Advanced PhD Student Funding page for more information.
Columbian College of Arts & Sciences PhD Funding
CCAS Doctoral Fellowship
CCAS’s most common package provides up to 5 years of funding for PhD students. This package includes 100% tuition coverage, a living stipend, and a guaranteed on-campus, salaried teaching or research-based graduate assistantship. Students are also eligible for an 80% health insurance stipend. Recipients may also be eligible for duty-free semester(s), dependent on department allowances. These packages are limited and vary in availability across departments.
Columbian Distinguished Fellowship
Highly qualified PhD applicants may be selected to receive the Columbian Distinguished Fellowship by their department. This funding package guarantees the same benefits as the CCAS Doctoral Fellowship, as well as an increased living stipend and guaranteed two semesters of duty-free fellowship. Packages are limited by department and will be allocated at the time of admission.
Grants
Select departments receive grant allocations which may offer funding for PhD students, often in tandem with Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) positions. Grant funded PhD packages will meet or exceed the total monetary value of the CCAS Doctoral Fellowship. However, students will receive funds through tuition benefits and a salary rather than a stipend. Students will also be eligible for the 80% health insurance stipend payment. Funding sources and duties may change annually. If you are successful in obtaining this funding, it will be included in your admission letter.
Student Health Insurance Reimbursement
Fully-funded students at both the master's and doctoral level are eligible for a health insurance subsidy, distributed by the Office of Graduate Assistantships & Fellowships (OGSAF). The subsidy covers 80% of the cost of health insurance for both fall and spring semesters. Students may also be eligible to receive the subsidy for summer terms. Please contact OGSAF at [email protected] with any questions related to the health insurance subsidy payment and eligibility. For general questions regarding student health insurance, please see the Student Health Center’s website for the most up to date information.
