Kathy Baird, BA ’96, (Political Science) was named chief communications officer at The Washington Post.

Bonnie Cash, MA ’21, (New Media Photojournalism); Candace Chambers, MA ’22, (New Media Photojournalism); Tierney Cross, MA ’21, (New Media Photojournalism); Sabrina Godin, BFA ’22, (Photojournalism); Maansi Srivastava, BFA ’22 (Photojournalism); and Professional Lecturer Astrid Riecken (Photojournalism) were selected to participate in the Women Photojournalists of Washington annual 2022 exhibition.

MFA student Vanessa Chen (Social Practice) presented a video installation on land acknowledgment on the facade of Lisner Auditorium to celebrate Native American Indian Heritage Month.

Emily B. Dufton, MA ’10, PhD ’14, (American Studies) received a $40,000 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant for her upcoming book, Addiction, Inc.: Medication-Assisted Treatment and the War on Drugs.

​​Yacine Tilala Fall, BFA ’19, (Fine Arts) curated “Being/Becoming: The Act of Portraiture,” a group exhibition featuring newly commissioned work by five Black women and gender non-conforming artists at the Washington Project for the Arts.

Rosa Fihla, BFA ’23, (Interior Architecture) released the album “The Sad Songs,” which is streaming on Spotify.

Ling Hao (Chemistry) was selected by the Human Proteome Organization as a 2022 “Rising Star.

Alex Jahangir, BS ‘99, (Biology) published the book Hot Spot: A Doctor’s Diary from the Pandemic (Vanderbilt University Press, 2022).

Jesse Kristin, BA ’07, (Biology); Tommy Siegel, BA ’07, (Journalism); and Ben Thornewill, BA ‘07, (Music) were featured in The Washington Post for their band Jukebox the Ghost, which they founded as GW undergraduates.

Anyi Mazo-Vargas (Biology) published research on butterfly wing patterns in a cover article for Science.

Gulnaz Sharafutdinova, PhD ’04, (Political Science) authored the essay “Russians Know the Reality of War, and Many of Them Still Support Putin” for The New York Times.

Silvio Waisbord (SMPA) was named president-elect-select of the International Communication Association.
