Awards Q&A for Admitted Students
Congratulations on your admission to the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences! We are thrilled to welcome you to the George Washington University. Being selected for a graduate award is a testament to your hard work and academic potential, and we are proud to support your journey. To help you navigate the details of your funding, we’ve compiled the following frequently asked questions.
- My award indicates full-time enrollment is required but I want to study part-time, what do I do?
Your tuition award is based on full-time enrollment of 9 credits per fall and spring semester. If your plan is to only study part-time please let us know by emailing ccasfell
gwu [dot] edu (ccasfell[at]gwu[dot]edu) and we will adjust your award. The minimum number of credits to be eligible for a tuition award is 6 credits per semester.- I received a larger award from another school, can you revised my GW award?
Of course! Please email us as askccas
gwu [dot] edu (askccas[at]gwu[dot]edu) requesting a revision of your award and we will send you a link to our counteroffer request form to have your award revised.- How can I get additional funding?
Students are considered for all potential funding at the time of admission. Students with competing offers from similar programs may be eligible for increased funding. Additional information on CCAS funding, as well as additional opportunities such as employment or external awards is available on the CCAS Graduate website.
- How do I accept my award offer?
When you accept admission, you will automatically accept your award offer. No further action is required to confirm your funding.
- How will I receive the funds from my tuition award?
Tuition awards will be applied directly to your student bill for the upcoming semester and subtract from overall tuition fees owed. Awards will be applied to student bills before the first day of classes each semester.
- Are there any requirements to receive my tuition funding?
You are required to register for the number of credits per semester as indicated in your award offer. No additional work or other duties are required. Students receiving awards are expected to meet the CCAS graduate minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 and continue to progress according to their program’s requirements to receive their award in future semesters.
- How will I be compensated for my work as a Graduate Assistant?
Graduate assistants receive salaries in compensation for their work. Salaries are paid on a monthly basis according to GW’s Payroll Calendar. Salary income is subject to federal, state, and FICA tax withholding, as with any paid employment. For more information regarding specific work duties, please contact your department directly.
- How can I apply for a Graduate Assistant position?
At the time of admission, applicants are considered for all possible funding, including graduate assistantship positions. If you are not selected for a position, you may still work as a graduate assistant in a future term. Selections for graduate assistantships are made by individual departments, so please reach out to your department or departments of interest directly. The University Writing Program also hires Writing in the Disciplines (WID) GAs to provide assistance in undergraduate courses throughout the university.
You can find other on campus jobs through the Student Talent Management System. These positions will vary in duties, pay, and hours. You may also find research positions through listings on The Student Research Commons.- Why is my award not visible on my student bill?
You may receive a copy of your bill before your award has been applied; please do not be concerned. Awards are typically applied to accounts by the first week of the semester. However, please ensure your enrollment meets the minimum credit requirements, as your award will not post until you are registered for the necessary number of credits.
If you have any additional questions regarding your award, please contact the CCAS Fellowship Team at ccasfell
