Julianne Thomas
Pediatrician (Retired)
BA '67, Zoology
Julianne Thomas is a pediatrician, retired after 40 years of practice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. That choice was recommended by a GWU professor/counselor, a rare recommendation for women in the 60's. She returned to the MidWest, receiving her MD at the University of Nebraska and following residency at the University of Iowa, started practice as the first female pediatrician in Cedar Rapids, building two large practices, establishing the first 17 NICU, founding a Diabetes Camp and being actively involved in health care policy through positions with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Iowa Medical Society. She was named to the inaugural National Council for Arts and Sciences after starting the Columbian College Endowment Scholarship Fund and is privileged to continue to contribute to GWU for opening a door to medicine
