Applying for Admission

An application for admission is required for all programs. If you are a current GW undergraduate student applying for a combined degree, please click here.

To be considered for admission to graduate studies in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, you must have demonstrated academic excellence and hold an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. Normally, a minimum of a B average is required.

Some programs require materials in addition to those listed below. To see if your program requires additional materials, please consult our graduate programs listing.

How to Apply

1. Review the admission requirements
Review the admission requirements for your program by visiting the relevant program page.

2. Complete the required standardized tests
Complete the relevant standardized test (GRE/TOEFL) if required. All master's and doctorate programs, with the exception of some MFA majors, require the GRE. The GRE may be waived if you already have a JD, MD or PhD. Check the relevant program page to see if the GRE scores are required. Make sure you send your official scores to George Washington University (GRE school code 5246). Your test scores must be received before the application deadline.

3. Organize your references
The online application will automatically send an email to your references requesting the recommendation. Please allow your references sufficient time to complete the recommendation as they must be submitted before the application deadline.

4. Submit the online application and all supporting documents
You must submit your application online through the online application center. You must also upload a Statement of Purpose and a Resume to your application. The graduate program page will indicate what is required in the statement of purpose. Some programs also require a writing statement. You may submit your application before your test scores and recommendations are received. You may not make any changes to your application once it is submitted.

5. Continue to check your admission status
You may log on to your online application at any time to review the current status. Once you submit your application, please allow 1-2 business days for your application to be reviewed and updated. Your application will be updated as we receive your official test scores and recommendations. You will be notified by email when you application is sent to the department for review and once a decision is made.

Your application will only be considered for admission once it is complete. Your application must be submitted and complete before the end of day of the application deadline.
