Completion Fellowship

The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences invites eligible PhD candidates to apply for Dean’s Dissertation Completion Fellowships. Each fellowship includes a stipend equivalent to the normal GA salary,and a stipend in the respective department for one or two semesters (typically $11,250 per semester) as well as an award of required candidacy tuition for the period of the fellowship. Three fellowships are available annually. Fellows will be expected to participate in a number of activities organized by Office of Graduate Studies. These activities include: presenting a chapter of one’s dissertation at a public forum and convening two brown-bag lunch sessions to discuss the research of other graduate students in the College.


Eligibility:

Each Dean’s Dissertation Completion Fellowship is intended to facilitate the completion of the PhD. Therefore, applicants must:

  • be in candidacy, ABD (ordinarily year five and above);
  • be US citizens or otherwise lawfully studying in the US;
  • have no more than one full year of dissertation work remaining at the start of the fellowship year, as certified by the dissertation advisor;
  • have no remaining dissertation completion funding available from their academic department or the University.

Deadlines:

The annual application period opens October 1. Applications are due (along with all supporting materials) on or before February 1. Applications will be reviewed by a CCAS faculty committee, the Graduate Studies Committee, or their designee.

To apply, submit the following:

  • Proposal (no more than 5 pages, double spaced, in Times New Roman 11-point font)
  • One-page timeline for the expected completion of dissertation writing and defense/filing
  • Up to three additional pages of images, musical scores, or other similar supporting non-text materials (optional)
  • Bibliography (no more than two pages)
  • Completed chapter of the dissertation (that is neither the introduction, nor the conclusion, nor the literature review) of not more than 25 double-spaced pages, in Times New Roman 11-point font; or a representative 25-page excerpt from a longer chapter. The chapter must be in English, though citations may be in other languages (with translations provided).
  • Two reference letters, one of which must come from the applicant's dissertation advisor
  • An official transcript
