Calculate Your GPA

Calculate Your GPA

The grade point average is computed on a formula that includes the points assigned to each grade (A through F) and the credit value of each class. The GPA is used to identify students for Dean's list and graduation honors and for academic probation or suspension.

Letter Grade QPE
A 4.00
A- 3.70
B+ 3.30
B 3.00
B- 2.70
C+ 2.30
C 2.00
C- 1.70
D+ 1.30
D 1.00
D- 0.70
F 0.00

Computing the Grade Point Average

Every grade from A through F has a quality point equivalent (QPE), which is used to determine the grade-point average (GPA), ranging from 4.0 for an A to 0.0 for an F. Courses marked CR, I, IPG, P, NP, W, or Z are not considered in determining the GPA. With the exception of courses taken through the Consortium (LINK) courses taken at other institutions are not used in computing the GPA. The GPA is obtained by dividing the total quality points by the total number of credit hours attempted.

Example Grades

Grade QPE Multiplied (X) Class Credit Hours Equals (=) Grade Points
A 4.00 X 3.00 = 12.00
B 3.00 X 3.00 = 9.00
C + 2.70 X 3.00 = 6.90
F 0.00 X 3.00 = 0.00
Totals 9.30 X 12.00 = 27.90

      • Total Grade Points ÷ Total Class Credits
      • 27.90 ÷ 12 = 2.33
      • GPA = 2.33

Student's Article Creates Buzz

Political Communication major Alec Jacobs didn't expect all the attention: When he heard Howard Dean was speaking to GW's College Democrats, intern Jacobs decided to pitch the story to his editor at The Daily Caller, commentator Tucker Carlson. Jacobs' article became the second most popular story on the Daily Caller's website.
