Academic Advising for Undeclared-Undecided Majors
Students will receive information about registering for their first semester classes when they accept admission to GW. A professional academic advisor will be assigned to them and they will communicate before the student arrives on campus about choosing classes, planning a schedule for the first semester, and meeting academic requirements.
Students will work with their advisor during the students’ first year to make a plan of study for the next four years, begin the process of identifying majors, select appropriate courses to fulfill the General Education Requirements, review policies and procedures that affect their academic progress, and address any academic or other issues that arise. The advisor is knowledgeable about all majors within the College and has a working understanding of other colleges within the University.
Students should investigate potential majors by speaking with departmental advisor in academic departments. Additionally, the advisor can refer students to offices throughout the University for career and professional development opportunities.
There are 18 professional undergraduate advisors who have expertise in a wide range of Columbian College and GW academic policies and procedures. Advisors are available in Phillips 107 and in the Pre-professional Advising Center in Smith Hall either by appointment or during Express Advising hours.
Incoming students will work with an advisor based upon the student's last name. Once a student declares a major, a departmental advisor is available to discuss major curricular requirements.
