2012 Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Contest at GWU

The George Washington University is hosting "Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Contest” in the Greater D.C. area again in 2012, sponsored by the Jiangsu International Cultural Exchange Center, Nanjing University in China, and Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, GWU in U.S. 

The 2012 speech contest is open to undergraduate students studying Chinese in colleges and universities in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. The contestants are going to be divided into two groups based on the language proficiency levels: Intermediate/Intermediate High and Advanced. Up to fourteen (14) finalists will be selected for the Final Round and each will receive an award.

Awards

UP to Two Gold Award Winners

Winners will receive the Gold Award Certificate as well as a full scholarship to complete a Master’s Degree at Nanjing University. The scholarship will be covered by Chinese Sponsors, which includes full tuition, housing, medical insurance and monthly living stipend. 

Gold Award winners may apply for any Master’s Program available at Nanjing University from January to March in 2013 or 2014 and start the program in the following September. It will take approximately two (2) to three (3) years to complete the degree.

(Any costs not mentioned above will be the responsibility of the award recipient.)

If a Gold Award winner does not wish to enroll in a master’s program at Nanjing University, he or she may keep the Gold Award Certificate but choose to receive the award package designed for the Silver Award winners.

UP to Four Silver Award Winners

Winners will receive a Silver Award Certificate as well as full funding from Chinese Sponsors to take an eight (8) day tour in Jiangsu Province in Summer of 2013 (date to be finalized).

The Silver Award winners will spend five (5) days in Nanjing, the capital city in Jiangsu Province. For the remainder of the tour, the winners will visit Suzhou City (2 days), and Yangzhou City (1 day) to explore the local and cultural attractions.

Chinese Sponsors will jointly fund all of the costs associated with the summer tour in Jiangsu, China, including roundtrip airfare, lodging, and local transportation in China as well as daily meals.  The Silver Award recipients are responsible for obtaining visas to China and the purchase of their own medical insurance.

UP to Eight  Bronze Award Winners

Winners will receive a Bronze Award Certificate as well as a full tuition award to study Chinese language at Nanjing University in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014.

Chinese Sponsors will coordinate the registration of this 1-semester program, including local lodging for Bronze Award winners.  Chinese Sponsors will not cover any lodging expenses.

Special Prize Winners

Contestants who are not selected to compete in the Final Round will be awarded the Special Prize with a certificate and gift. Special Prize winners are invited to attend the final round to watch the competition.
