The department offers the degrees of M.A. in Mathematics, M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and Ph.D. in Mathematics. Our programs prepare students for careers in academia, business, industry, and government.

Mathematics doctoral students at GW can pursue research in many areas, including algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, combinatorics, dynamical systems, logic, and topology. See our faculty web pages for more detailed, current information on our research interests. Our many colloquia and seminars help students explore potential research areas.

Many aspects of our program, including the size (about 20 graduate students and 20 faculty) and the array of research seminars, foster interaction between students and faculty. Also, graduate students have individual advisors throughout their enrollment, starting with the assignment of an initial faculty advisor at the time of admission. Our graduate students have a strong tradition of working together (e.g., preparing for qualifying exams together or collaborating on research projects).

All full-time Ph.D. applicants who request support are considered for teaching assistantships, which include competitive salaries and full tuition waivers. Once granted, support is normally continued for up to six years if satisfactory progress is being made toward the Ph.D. TAs teach or (more commonly) lead recitations for introductory undergraduate courses.

We welcome both full-time and part-time students.
