The Institute for Documentary Filmmaking is offered annually January through

June.  This nine-credit intensive program is designed to prepare emerging

filmmakers for the world of documentary film and television production.

Participants come from diverse professional and educational backgrounds, and

though the program is rigorous, previous experience in film and video

is not required.

Topics in the Institute include film conceptualization, visual theory, story

structure, screen writing, practical workshops in camera, lighting, sound

and Final Cut Pro editing.  During the final two months of the program, Institute participants will create a short documentary film.

Applicants to the program must address two questions in their Statements of Purpose:

1) Why do you wish to be a member of the Institute? What unique experience or attributes would make you an asset to a documentary production team? Note that selection is based on a variety of criteria, not only on your past academic or professional experience, but also on your personal interests, travel experience, and world-view.

2) Because the members of each Institute collectively produce a short documentary film, we are interested in learning more about your ability to work with others. Please carefully describe a significant experience in which you had to depend upon others and work in a group.
