The 5th Annual Jiangsu Cup Speech Contest in the Greater D.C. area will be co-sponsored by the following institutions:

  •  Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, The George Washington University
  •  Confucius Institute, The George Washington University
  • The Language Center, The George Washington University
  • Institute for International Students, Nanjing University
  • Jiangsu International Cultural Association
  • Jiangsu International Cultural Exchange Center
  • Confucius Institute, George Mason University
  • Confucius Institute, University of Maryland College Park

The 2015 speech contest is open to undergraduate and graduate students studying Chinese in colleges and universities in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. Finalists will be selected for the Final Round and each will receive an award, including scholarships to study abroad in China.

The 2015 speech contest is open for the first time to students studying Chinese in the Confucius Institutes at the George Washington University, George Mason University and the University of Maryland College Park. Finalists selected from this group of contestants will compete separately. Awards include round-trip airfare to China and tuition waiver/discounts to study Chinese at these Confucius Institutes.


2015 Awards – University Student Contestant Group

Two Gold Awards

Winners will receive the Gold Award Certificate and one of the following three awards of their choice:

  • Winners will receive a full scholarship to complete a Master’s Degree at Nanjing University. The scholarship will be covered by Chinese Sponsors, which includes full tuition, housing, medical insurance and monthly stipend. Gold Award winners may apply for any Master’s Program available at Nanjing University and should start the program in September 2016.
  • Winners will receive a scholarship toward tuition from the Institute of International Students of Nanjing University to study Chinese at Nanjing University for a full semester, which will be February to June or September to December in 2016. In addition to the tuition support, winners will receive a total stipend of RMB 5,000 as well as USD 1,500 towards international airfare. If you choose this award option, please contact the study abroad office of your home institution to verify credit transfer and other related matters. (For contestants from GW, consistent with GW Study Abroad policies, the student will pay GW tuition for the semester minus a scholarship of approximately $3,000.)
  • Winners can also choose the “Eight-Day Tour in Jiangsu Province” in summer 2016; the tour will be fully funded by the Chinese Sponsors.

Five Silver Awards

Winners will receive the Silver Award Certificate and one of the following two awards of their choice:

  • The winners will spend 8 days touring Jiangsu Province in summer 2016. The Chinese Sponsors are funding all of the costs associated with this tour including round-trip international airfare, local lodging, meal and local transportation in China. The Silver Award recipients are responsible for obtaining visas to China and the purchase of their own medical insurance. Any costs not mentioned above will be the responsibility of the award recipients.
  • Winners will receive a scholarship toward tuition from the Institute of International Students of Nanjing University to study Chinese at Nanjing University for a full semester, which will be February to June or September to December in 2016. In addition to the tuition support, winners will receive a total stipend of RMB 5,000 as well as USD 750 towards international airfare. If you choose this award option, please contact the study abroad office of your home institution to verify credit transfer and other related matters. (For contestants from GW, consistent with GW Study Abroad policies, the student will pay GW tuition for the semester minus a scholarship of approximately $3,000.)

Nine Bronze Awards

Winners will receive the Bronze Award Certificate and one of the following two awards of their choice:

  • Winners will receive a scholarship toward tuition from the Institute of International Students of Nanjing University to study Chinese at Nanjing University for a full semester, which will be February to June or September to December in 2016. In addition to the tuition support, winners will receive a total stipend of RMB 5,000. If you choose this award option, please contact the study abroad office of your home institution to verify credit transfer and other related matters. (For contestants from GW, consistent with GW Study Abroad policies, the student will pay GW tuition for the semester minus a scholarship of approximately $3,000.)
  • Winners will receive a scholarship toward tuition from the Institute of International Students of Nanjing University to study Chinese at Nanjing University for a 4-week summer semester, which will be May to July in 2016. The student will receive full tuition coverage from the Institute of International Students of Nanjing University. In addition to the tuition support, winners will receive a total stipend of RMB 3,000. If you choose this award option, please contact the study abroad office of your home institution to verify credit transfer and other related matters.

2015 Awards – Confucius Institute Student Contestant Group

One Gold Award

The winner will receive the Gold Award Certificate and one of the following awards of his or her choice:

  • If the winner signs up for the 2016 Confucius Institute Summer Tour of China as a enrolled student at any of the three local CIs, his or her round-trip international airfare will be covered. (All the in-country expenses will be paid by the Confucius Institute Headquarters.)
  • The winner can receive free instruction of Chinese in a group class in both Spring 2016 and Fall 2016 Semesters.
  • The winner can receive 12 free sessions of One-on-One Instruction of Chinese at the George Washington University Confucius Institute or at any other two local Confucius Institutes based on the availability of the classes.         

One Silver Award

The winner will receive the Silver Award Certificate and one of the following awards of his or her choice:

  • The winner can receive free instruction of Chinese in a group class in both Spring 2016 and Fall 2016 semesters.
  • The winner can receive 12 free sessions of One-on-One instruction of Chinese at the George Washington University Confucius Institute or at any other two local Confucius Institutes based on the availability of the classes.

One Bronze Award

The winner will receive the Bronze Award Certificate and one of the following awards of his or her choice:

  •  The winner can receive free instruction of Chinese in a group class in either semester Spring 2016 or Fall 2016.
  • The winner can receive 6 free sessions of One-on-One instruction of Chinese at the George Washington University Confucius Institute or at any other two local Confucius Institutes based on the availability of the classes.
